It has been a wonderful start to the school year! Our students are settling into their classrooms, learning new routines, building friendships, and showing what it means to be the Heart of Haskin. Thank you to our families for your patience, encouragement, and support as we begin another exciting year together.

During the first few weeks of school, our staff intentionally focused on building strong classroom and school communities. They worked to develop positive relationships, establish routines and expectations, and understand each child as an individual learner. Students have also been introduced to our Heart of Haskin values: Growth Mindset, Responsibility, Respect, Collaboration, Empathy, Integrity, and Citizenship. With this important foundation in place, classrooms are now building upon the curriculum and moving more deeply into academic learning.

The Sandwich Fair is next week, and we know this is a special tradition for many of our families. We are excited to celebrate the fair and see the many projects, talents, and contributions of our students and community members. We hope everyone enjoys a safe and memorable week with family and friends!

As September continues, we look forward to building on this positive start and creating more opportunities for students to learn, grow, connect, and demonstrate the values at the Heart of Haskin.

Thank you for your continued patience and cooperation with our morning drop-off procedures. The high school has worked hard to address its traffic concerns, and we have seen a noticeable improvement in that area.

To help us continue reduce congestion around the school block, please do not enter the Haskin parking lot before 7:45 a.m., when student drop-off begins. Vehicles entering or lining up early creates a significacnt backup that makes it impossible for staff members to enter the parking lot and be in the building upon student arrival. The backup also causes buses unable to enter drive through lane and delay their arrival times at other district buildings, including SMS and Prairie View.

By waiting until 7:45 a.m. to enter the lot, you help prevent traffic from backing up onto the street, allow staff and buses to enter the parking lot, and ensure our team is ready to welcome students. This helps morning arrival run safely and efficiently throughout the district.

The carryover period for students who were receiving free/reduced lunch for the 2025-2026 school year will end on September 24, 2026. If a new 2026-2027 application has not been submitted by that date, your child will automatically be put on paid breakfast and lunch beginning September 25, 2026.

What: A fun morning to spend time & conversation with your children. Donuts, juice & water will be provided. You will have time to have donuts with your kids, and then spend time engaging in fun activities with your student.  Be sure to stop by the photo backdrop for a picture! 

Who: Dudes, Dads, or other VIP father figures in our students' lives are welcome to join us for this event.

Sandwich District 430 has partnered with Orland Park Dental Services for dental services for eligible children.

These services may include an exam, cleaning, fluoride treatment and sealants (a protective coating on the chewing surfaces of back teeth).

Licensed dentists, hygienists and assistants will come to your child’s school with portable equipment.

Get ready to walk! This year’s Walktober event will take place on Thursday, October 8, with all funds raised supporting the purchase of STEAM supplies for our students.

Walktober is our One and Done Fundraiser, which means Haskin School and HOP will not ask families to participate in any other fundraising efforts during the school year.

Families can begin supporting Walktober by visiting our online fundraising page.

Parents will have the option to walk with their children during their scheduled time. Additional information about parent participation will be shared as the event approaches.

The district worked closely with the Regional Office of Education to create an attendance policy that is more aligned with the rest of the county. Our goal is to reduce the number of Chronic Absentee students within the district.

To achieve this goal, we updated our attendance policy to create systems of support to monitor attendance and support families. The biggest changes are outlined below for families. Additional details can be found in the student handbook for each school.

Please help us achieve a positive school outcome through consistent student attendance. This is a significant predictor of student and school success. If someone in your family is unable to attend school for the day, it will be important that you report the absence by 10:00 AM.

Our district follows a security protocol for guests and volunteers entering the buildings. This includes chaperoning Field Trips. This system requires identification from visitors (i.e. state ID, driver’s license, etc.), and all visitors will be photographed. A quick background check will be performed by searching US sex offender databases (with the option to expand this to criminal databases.). The system also links with our student database to provide an extra layer of protection for students with no contact orders.

Completing the process early will help ensure quick and easy entry into the building for future school events throughout the year. Plan ahead for those Field Trips!
